If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Heritage Manufacturing Inc. must be blushing heavily right now because Cimmaron Firearms has come out with a .22lr SAA copy of the Rough Rider.

Now it may seem odd to call Cimmaron's SAA (called the Plinkerton) a copy of the Heritage Rough Rider, but hear me out. At $189.00 and 209.50 for the lr or combo model it prices close to the Heritage; and the Plinkerton comes with Cimmaron's version of the Hammer Block Safety! The big difference between the two is that you need a key to operate the one on the Plinkerton while the safety on the Heritage can be operated by your thumb.

What are the differences? With the Heritage Rough Rider you can choose your sights, grip styles, grip types, barrel legnths, and finishes of the revolver. With the Plinkerton you get only one barrel legnth (4.75 inches), one type of grip (Plowhandle), one style of grip (Black checkered plastic), and one finish (matte black).

Also instead of the barrel and cylinder being made of steel, as on the Heritage, the Cimmarons are made of alloy with steel inserts for stregnth.

Does this make the Cimmaron Plinkerton a bad gun? In my opinion no, I'm sure that many SASS shooters who already own Cimmaron firarms will like the Plinkster, but if you want a gun that lets you choose the size and style that best suits you, buy a Heritage!

It doesn't surprise me really. Cimmaron has been copying good idea's for quite some time now.
Matter of fact that's basically their niche in the market really? The only real surprise to me is that they'd copy the Heritage, which already has it's own niche in the gun market as a quality gun that's very reasonably priced, with a gun that doesn't measure up in price or quality?! :?

I am glad I read this.
Guy at Cabela's showed us one the day we bought our RR.
I had never heard of it before.
It was heavier and did not balance as well as the RR IMO.
Nor did it look as nice.

Favorite Heritage: rough rider 22
A buddy of mine was VERY close to purchasing one of these as well until I found him a used RR with a 4.75"bbl for $100 at a local pawn shop! I also purchased a used RR with a 9"bbl and adjustable sights for $120! I called him to come down there and meet me to decide which of the two he wanted before I scooped up the other one!! I AM A GOOD FRIEND!! ARENT I ?!

It's been on the market for several months. Cimarron's guns are all made in Italy. The larger calibers are massaged by Cimarron before they go to distributors, but IIRC the Plinkerton comes in one door and goes out the other without being touched. The reviews I've read have generally been negative, noting poor/rough finish and overall cheapness. (More so than you read about RRs! )

Yeah, I saw the Plinkerton and saw it wasn't for me.

95shlin, you are definitely a good friend. I would've bought the one I wanted first than called up my buddy to let him know about the other.

I'm with Ulmus on this one 95! I'd have bought the one I wanted and then let him pick from the ONE that was left! LOL :wink1:

Favorite Heritage: 6.5in. Blue 22 Combo
I considered the Plinkerton when I was looking at the Rough Rider. Basically, those were the two choices I had in mind. I actually preferred the style of the safety on the Plinkerton (because it fits more or less flush into the frame meaning I could throw, er, I mean put the key away and pretend the safety wasn't even there.) I liked the Heritage better on pretty much everything else, though. The big decision maker was barrel length - the ability to plink with LR but carry magnums was the whole reason I wanted a SA. Since magnum use figured so heavily into my decision, I wanted a 6.5 inch barrel to allow the mags to develop a little more velocity. Being that the HRR had a 6.5 inch barrel option and the Plinkerton did not that pretty well sealed the deal.

Can't fault your logic there. :smiley1:

I like hearing how people think honestly about what they want from a gun and how they plan on using it. I did it when I sold Saturns and I would honestly tell the customer to check out Honda if they wanted to compare the two. (I actually had some come back! Not many, but some.)

I've seen and shot the Plinkerton and....... I'd stick with the RR. There are a number of distressing features on Plinkerton like a super flimsy ejector rod, rough action etc. Gave me a bad feeling. Very out of nature for Cimarron, their guns are usually super high quality stuff by the likes of Uberti, Pedersoli and Pietta.

Yep. Cimarron does usually have high quality products. I think they made the Plinkerton with the idea of highest profit possible for the price.

I might have said this in an earlier post, but when I looked at the pics of the Plinkerton and then saw it in person, it reminded me of the Buffalo Plains revolver I had.

I'll give you a guess on what I did with it.

I think I recall that comment Ulmus and agree with it. Maybe you and I did the same thing with them. I sold mine( to a Doctor believe it or not and yes he knows guns). FIE Buffalo Scout mine was and it was a far better gun than El Plinko. imo
