We brough home a new member of the family.

A two year old yellow lab mix, named Sadie. (I'll take some pics and post them tomorrow.) Carol and I went to the Sarasota kennel only to find the dog we wanted had been adopted 7 minutes earlier. (We got there seven minutes after the place opened.) Carol was a little dissapointed since the same thing happened last week at a different shelter.

Her son, Brian, suggested we try the county pound and see what they had. Since we had not known of this other pound/shelter, we decided to check it out. It turned out that they had the best choice of dogs our of the four shelters we had been to. (Our local shelter had only pit mixes and we just don't trust them; epsecially with a grand baby roaming around.)

That is where we found Sadie. She was an abandon find and seems pretty smart. she loves to play fetch and will actually drop the ball at you hand or "toss" the ball into it.

Being only two, she has a ton of energy. this dog has not stopped sionce we got her home. And this is with a few good hours of hard playing with Brians young hound dog. (I am also not so secretly loving the fact that Sadie thinks she's a lap dog and keeps trying to climb her 50 pound frame onto Carol's lap. :funny: )

I figure she will calm down soon enough and will get accustomed to our life-style.

Just don't ask the cat's what they think!

Good for you! :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: We've gotten all our dogs from animal shelters or owners unable to keep them. Sounds like she's gonna bring a lot of joy into your house. Labs are wonderful dogs. We had a golden lab who would chase rocks I'd throw into the river; she'd dive to the bottom and come back with a rock. Never the one I'd thrown mind you, but a rock nonetheless.

ETA: We all know what cats think: "Where's the best place to ambush that biped and trip him/her?"

NICE!
Congrats on the new edition to the family!
Those labs usually mellow out a bit by 2 or 3. So you should have a nice calm family dog soon. :wink1:
But now that you have a good huntin dog it's time to go get some upland game hunting time in! :grin1:

By the way whichfinger...... I had a Newfoundland that would do the same thing. The first time he dove under water to get a rock he was just 9 weeks old! Scared the heck out of me! I thought he was gonna drown! lol And he grew up to be 180 pounds of lap dog too Ulmus! :grin1:

Rock fetching sounds like fun, but is definetly a Northern sport. Way too many gators to try that here. I might have to try it in northen Georgia though.

Here's some pics for ya.

And as expected, this $10.00 adopted dog has cost us roughly $300 in beds, cages, toys, and other stuff. :funny:

congrats on the new pup! our lab finally calmed down at around age 9. She used to run with the horses around 7 miles a day and then play still ball with the kids. shes probably the best all around dog we have ever had. DR

I look at those pics and I see a dog whose brain is going, "Busybusybusybusyfindmesomethingtodobusybusyplaywithmebusybus - ooooo, shiny!"

That 300 bucks is only the down payment. Wait til you see the vet bill.

[threaddrift]Surprised me too, the first time she did it. I threw a stick once, she jumped in, then lost sight of it but she spotted an old snag under water and stuck her nose down to grab it. That did scare me, 'cause the snag wasn't about to come up and it seemed for the longest time like she wasn't about to let go. I finally jumped in and pulled her off. [/threaddrift]

I also pulled my Newf off his first rock fetch!
I jumped in thinking he drown and pulled him up! Soon as we got there he went back down! :groan:
I finally figured out he was doing it for fun and had no problems staying under for a minute or two at a time! :scared: :dunno:

Another thread drift.....Sort of.....Speaking of costing too much money! I know exactly how that goes Ulmus. :? But it's worht it in the long run. :wink1:
My family has been trying to get me to bring another dog home since our last one died 4 or 5 years ago. I've been fighting it off simply because it's kind of nice not having the mess, hassle and expense of a dog. even though I love animals and have had a dog basically all of my life. Just gettin old and selfish I guess? :dunno:

Fast forward to yesterday (Sunday) and the wife and kid talked me into paying WAY TOO MUCH for a little ankle biter that my daughter fell in love with while they were out shopping. Now mind you, the only reason I've been waffling on getting another dog is for my daughter. All kids should have a dog of their own at some point IMO. So I've been feeling guilty about her not having one.... Even though she has a parakeet and 3 rats of her own.
So now we have a "Maltipoo" that she promptly named Daisy. lol
She's 8 and a half weeks old and cute as a button. But I've never had a dog that weighed less than a hundred pounds fulll grown. And this one is supposed to be approximately 6 pounds when full grown! :groan:

The only pic I have right now is on my cell phone. I'll post it in a bit.

Now that pic makes it worth it. She looks so happy and so does the dog. :goodjob:

Just make sure you put a bike flag on her tail when you walk her in that Colorado snow.

The vet bill will actually be surprisingly low. Sadie is already spayed and has had all her shots except for the rabies which the adoption fee pays for. That's good since I just dropped $300 on the cat for an ear surgery. Polyp inside the ear. Noncancerous.

Now an ultrasound for the other cat with a heart murrmurr.... :scared:

Somethin tells me we wont be able to put her outside during the heavy snows! Maybe we oughta teach her how to use a kitty box? :dunno: LOL Might not ever find her again otherwise.

Vet bills are KILLER! :? Already spent 80 today for this new edition. :sad1:
