Hello Everyone,

I'm really glad I found this forum. I am going to be purchasing my first Heritage Rough Rider .22 lr in about 2 weeks. About six years ago I bought a Ruger P95DC 9mm. Basically, I bought it because it looked cool and it was a 9mm. I've shot that pistol once in the last six years. I've always been a fan of the old style single action revolvers. So, I am going to sell the Ruger and purchase a Rough Rider. I'm more comfortable with revolvers and it's a good caliber to get my wife to shoot without fear of the recoil.

Does anyone have any advice for me before I make the purchase?
Should I buy online or at a local store?
4.5 inch or 6.5 inch barrel?

Thank you for your time!

Jim

1. If you buy local, you can fondle it and inspect the finish before you take the plunge. If you buy on line you have to pay shipping plus the transfer fee your local FFL will charge.

2. Adjustable sights are generally better than fixed because ... well, they're adjustable. Fixed sights, OTOH, can't be bumped out of alignment by rough treatment.

3. I have three HRRs, a 3 1/2", 5 1/2", and 6 1/2", the latter with adjustable sights. The longer sight radius of the 6 1/2" makes it a little easier to hit what I'm aiming at, but the 5 1/2" is no slouch. IMO I don't think there's any compelling advantage to a 4 1/2", but they do sorta look more gunslingery. :wink1:

:welcome: to the forum!

Sorry to hear you do not like your P95.
I was unsure of mine at first but have come to enjoy shooting it.

As for the HRR I would try and buy local for the reasons Whichfinger has stated.
I'll also add that you may want to try and move the P95 (depending on local laws) at a gun show.
Prices are a bit higher theses days at shows so you can walk tables and see what they are going for before putting a price on yours.
If you get a good enough price you may be able to get two HRR's

Favorite Heritage: rough rider .22cal.
:welcome: I prefer the longer barrel. No reason, just the look I guess. I hear there is a new 9 shot available. Might be worth a look. Not too many people have them yet. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

If I can't find a Heritage RR at a local store, how much does an FFL typically charge?

The adjustable sights are great but if you can find a deal on a used or new one with fixed sights go for it. It isn't hard to adjust the front sight which is what I did to my $100 pawn shop find. I also prefer the 6.5" barrel myself - longer the barrel the more accurate the shooter. I've found in the past with other convertibles the mag cylinder gets used hardly ever so buying just the 22lr can save you some dollars compared to the convertible. My ffl charges $15 -20 depending on rifle or handgun.

Happy shooting :gunslinger:

Hi Jim. Welcome to the site! :grin1:

Like you, I prefer revolvers to semi-auto handguns. (I sold my Kel Tec P-11 to help pay for my Heritage big bore.) To offer some advice over what Rough Rider to get, I have to as if you shoot your gun like Dirty Harry or Jack Bauer? It's doesn't make that much of a difference, but the shorter barreled Rough Riders might balance better in a single hand shooting style while the 6.5" barrel might feel better with a two handed hold. (I use the two handed hold myself.)

I highly recommend Whichfinger's suggestion and to try to find a store that has them in stock to "feel them out" for yourself. Heritage Manufacturing has a dealer locator that can help you find a store near you.

As for my experience in FFL transfer fees, it's usually $10 to $20 depending on what store I have it shipped to.

FWIW I've seen FFL fees out here go anywhere from a low of 10 dollars to a high of 50 dollars. :?
So shop around if that's the route you decide to take. :wink1:

OH! And welcome to the site!

Welcome Jim. Transfer fees in my area are typically in the 25 dollar range, though I've never used them for that. I have the 6.5 inch combo with fixed sights that I bought from our member kalboy here and love it. Being as it's bored for the magnum round, I've found some Lapua .22lr here locally that's made for a .224 bore I'm gonna try.
I've not shot it much yet, and I'm not that good with a handgun to start with, but I can tell you my wife is used to .40, .45, so the RR is nothing for her to shoot. The RR should be a perfect starting point if she's never shot, or has and just don't like the recoil of more caliber.
I can only speak from the 6.5" option, but they are nice little guns for sure.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone.

I called about seven different shops and no one has any RR's in stock. So, looks like I will have to buy online. At www.budsgunshop.com they give you a list of ffl's to use but they don't lists their prices. Can I just call a local shop and see how much they will charge?

Yep, just call the closest one to you and ask what they charge to transfer. You don't have to use the one's listed either. You can go to your local shop and ask them too. They will just have to provide Bud's their FFL info., or give it to you for when you order.

Wow! That is amazing that seven shops didn't have any Rough Riders in stock. :shocked1:

Call a couple of those gun shops and see who gives you the lowest transfer fee.

Good news! My friend wants to purchase my Ruger P95 DC 9mm. So, I will be ready to purchase my RR early next week. Hopefully I can find a shop that has an RR so I can skip those nasty shipping and ffl charges. Th :gunslinger: e search continues!
